Most laptops today are powered by Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries. These are a great alternative to the older technologies since they have a much higher power to weight ratio, are not prone to the memory effect phenomenon and are inherently more environmentally friendly. However, much like the older battery chemistries, they do have a limited lifetime. Although the older chemistries rates of failure were proportional to the number of charging cycles, the capacity of today’s Lithium-ion batteries diminish with age.
When you find that your laptop computer does not hold its charge as long as it used to, or when your system’s power management utility software indicates that its charge level is decreasing, you will need to find a replacement laptop battery to maintain your computer’s operating time. Finding the correct battery is generally a matter of searching for a battery that will fit your computer’s make and model number. In addition, the specifications for the battery are usually found imprinted on the charger.

With this information in hand, there are several sources from which you can purchase a new battery. These generally include the computer manufacturer, specialized electronic and computer retailers and a number of Internet sources. You will also find that, in addition to the OEM battery, there may also be a number of generic equivalents available.
Buying a replacement laptop battery directly from the manufacturer is the easiest choice, but you will be paying a premium price for this convenience. Secondary sources of OEM batteries will generally charge you as much as the computer manufacturer and in some cases you may even pay more.
This is true of both brick and mortar stores and online sites that sell computer batteries. But if you are a value shopper, you will soon realize that generic batteries will offer you the same level of performance at a substantial cost savings. Additionally, you may be able to increase your laptop’s operating time by upgrading your battery and choosing one with a higher milliamp rating in the generic equivalent. These higher capacity generic batteries typically cost much less than the OEM’s standard capacity battery.

Generic laptop batteries are produced at the same manufacturing plants that originally produced the laptop battery for the computer manufacturer; batteries are simply an out-sourced item for the computer maker. But these batteries may also be made at facilities whose standards are not as high as the primary plant’s and the only way to ensure that you have purchased a quality battery is to check the reputation of the supplier or the seller, make sure that they provide a liberal warrantee and test the battery by charging it in your computer soon after it is received.
The author performed a case study and examined the cost to buy a replacement laptop battery for a Dell Inspiron. He found that he was able to save more than 50% on a laptop battery that provided a higher capacity and offered an extended operating time. The shopping for a replacement laptop battery article provides the details. Please visit replacement laptop batteries for more buying tips and technical advice regarding computer batteries.

What to Know Before Buying a Replacement Laptop Batteries?
There are many laptop batteries manufacturers, and even more retailers to buy your laptop battery from. However, your biggest concern in purchasing a laptop battery will be to choose the battery that fits your computer. For this you will need to know the make and model number of your laptop; if you don't know this offhand or don't have the necessary paperwork, check the inside of your laptop's battery compartment while the computer is off and unplugged. There you should find the model number, along with some other information. You may also find the part number of your laptop battery, located on the casing of the battery itself.
How to Choose a Replacement Laptop Battery?
When buying a laptop battery, you will probably only have one or two choices that fit your computer. Choose the battery with the longest life available for your computer. There are several different kinds of laptop batteries; because the technologies of each are very different, a laptop must be designed specifically for the type of battery it uses. Most laptops are only designed to use one type of battery technology.

Holding hands reduces pain
http://www.toppower.co.uk/ - Cheap laptop batteries, notebook batteries, laptop ac adapters and laptop dc adapters for UK Laptop users, including Dell laptop batteries, Toshiba laptop batteries, Acer laptop batteries, IBM laptop batteries, HP laptop batteries etc.
Researchers revealed that, at least for women, the touch or sight of a partner seems to anaesthetise them. Even a photograph of their loved one is enough to have an effect.
The discovery was made by psychologists at the University of California and "underscores the importance of social relationships and staying socially connected", they reported.
The 25 volunteers were mostly students who had been in a good relationship with their boyfriends for at least six months.
Tests revealed that if the young women were given a mild burn, they felt less discomfort by looking at photos of their boyfriends.
A similar anaesthetising effect was found if they held hands with their partners when "moderately painful heat stimuli" was applied to their forearms.
Researcher Naomi Eisenberger, an assistant professor of psychology involved in the study, said: "When the women were just looking at pictures of their partner, they actually reported less pain to the heat stimuli than when they were looking at pictures of an object or pictures of a stranger.
"The mere reminder of one's partner through a simple photograph was capable of reducing pain.
"This changes our notion of how social support influences people. Typically, we think that in order for social support to make us feel good, it has to be the kind of support that is very responsive to our emotional needs.
"Here, however, we are seeing that just a photo of one's significant other can have the same effect."
In further experiments, each woman held either the hand of her boyfriend, the hand of a male stranger or a squeeze ball. The "thermal stimulus" last for just a tenth of second to produce a "sharp prickling sensation."
The volunteers who held hands "reported less physical pain than when they were holding a stranger's hand or a ball while receiving the same amount of heat stimulation".
Prof Eisenberger added: "This study demonstrates how much of an impact our social ties can have on our experience and fits with other work emphasising the importance of social support for physical and mental health."
The findings might also explain why a mother can apparently give instant comfort to a poorly child by "kissing it better".
The researchers gave advice to anyone suffering pain or stress that if you cannot bring a loved one with you, a photo may do instead.
The study is published in the journal Psychological Science.

How Long Do Laptop Batteries Last? And What Can You Do to Improve This?
Most people buy laptops because they want to be portable. They want to move around the house or work in coffee shops or the library. Unfortunately, you can’t always get as much done as you want to, because you can’t always find a place to plug them in.

This isn’t as good as it sounds though. The typical laptop battery (in a 14 or 15 inch laptop) is a 6-cell battery that lasts around 2 hours. They might last a little longer than that, or a little less. It depends on what you’re doing.
If you are pushing the laptop (watching DVDs or editing photos) the battery will drain faster. Just think about how you get tired faster when you run than when you walk. Luckily, you’re not stuck with that 2 hours. You have a couple of options.
First, you can always buy a second battery. Then, when you’re about to run out of juice, just swap batteries. That will give you four hours.
Even better, you can buy a second battery that’s a larger-capacity than your original battery. As I said, most batteries that come with laptops are 6-cell batteries. You can buy bigger cell batteries that will give you longer battery life. You can buy these extended batteries from the laptop manufacturer, whether that’s Apple, Dell, HP, Sony, or whoever. They are more expensive, but they’re a good way to get more work done while you’re on the road.

Those are your main options, but there are manufacturer-specific options. For instance, Dell sells something called a modular bay battery. You pull out your optical drive (DVD or CD drive), and install this battery instead.
Then you get longer battery life because your laptop has two batteries. The laptop uses the modular battery first, just in case you want to use your optical drive. That way you will get the most battery life possible, because the primary battery is not used until the modular bay battery is used up.
This just proves that each manufacturer is striving to improve in this area all the time. So always check out what your manufacturer has available to help improve your battery life. People keep talking about a revolution in this area, but for now, you have to think creatively to get the most out of your laptop.

Laptop Battery Tips,15 Ways to Extend Your Laptop Battery Life
Laptops tend to lose their charm quickly when you’re constantly looking for the nearest power outlet to charge up. How do you keep your battery going for as long as possible? Here are 15 easy ways to do so.Hopefully it would be a little help for you!
http://www.pioneer-electronics.co.uk/ is is everyone's one-stop shop for laptop batteries, laptop ac adapters and laptop dc adapters, including Dell laptop batteries, Toshiba laptop batteries, Acer laptop batteries, HP laptop batteries etc.
1. Defrag regularly - The faster your hard drive does its work - less demand you are going to put on the hard drive and your battery. Make your hard drive as efficient as possible by defragging it regularly. (but not while it’s on battery of course!) Mac OSX is better built to handle fragmentation so it may not be very applicable for Apple systems.
2. Dim your screen - Most laptops come with the ability to dim your laptop screen. Some even come with ways to modify CPU and cooling performance. Cut them down to the lowest level you can tolerate to squeeze out some extra battery juice.
3. Cut down on programs running in the background. Itunes, Desktop Search, etc. All these add to the CPU load and cut down battery life. Shut down everything that isn't crucial when you're on battery.
4. Cut down external devices - USB devices (including your mouse) & WiFi drain down your laptop battery. Remove or shut them down when not in use. It goes without saying that charging other devices (like your iPod) with your laptop when on battery is a surefire way of quickly wiping out the charge on your laptop battery.
5. Add more RAM - This will allow you to process more with the memory your laptop has, rather than relying on virtual memory. Virtual memory results in hard drive use, and is much less power efficient. Note that adding more RAM will consume more energy, so this is most applicable if you do need to run memory intensive programs which actually require heavy usage of virtual memory.

6. Run off a hard drive rather than CD/DVD - As power consuming as hard drives are, CD and DVD drives are worse. Even having one in the drive can be power consuming. They spin, taking power, even when they?re not actively being used. Wherever possible, try to run on virtual drives using programs like Alcohol 120% rather than optical ones.
7. Keep the battery contacts clean: Clean your battery’s metal contacts every couple of months with a cloth moistened with rubbing alcohol. This keeps the transfer of power from your battery more efficient.
8. Take care of your battery - Exercise the Battery. Do not leave a charged battery dormant for long periods of time. Once charged, you should at least use the battery at least once every two to three weeks. Also, do not let a Li-On battery completely discharge. (Discharing is only for older batteries with memory effects)
9. Hibernate not standby - Although placing a laptop in standby mode saves some power and you can instantly resume where you left off, it doesn’t save anywhere as much power as the hibernate function does. Hibernating a PC will actually save your PC’s state as it is, and completely shut itself down.
10. Keep operating temperature down - Your laptop operates more efficiently when it’s cooler. Clean out your air vents with a cloth or keyboard cleaner, or refer to some extra tips by LapTopMag.com.
11. Set up and optimize your power options - Go to ‘Power Options’ in your windows control panel and set it up so that power usage is optimized (Select the ‘max battery’ for maximum effect).
12. Don't multitask - Do one thing at a time when you’re on battery. Rather than working on a spreadsheet, letting your email client run in the background and listening to your latest set of MP3’s, set your mind to one thing only. If you don’t you’ll only drain out your batteries before anything gets completed!
13. Go easy on the PC demands - The more you demand from your PC. Passive activities like email and word processing consume much less power than gaming or playing a DVD. If you’ve got a single battery charge - pick your priorities wisely.
14. Get yourself a more efficient laptop - Laptops are getting more and more efficient in nature to the point where some manufacturers are talking about all day long batteries. Picking up a newer more efficient laptop to replace an aging one is usually a quick fix.
15. Prevent the Memory Effect - If you’re using a very old laptop, you’ll want to prevent the ‘memory effect’ - Keep the battery healthy by fully charging and then fully discharging it at least once every two to three weeks. Exceptions to the rule are Li-Ion batteries (which most laptops have) which do not suffer from the memory effect.

6 Ways to Leverage Social Media for a Better Vacation
Before the latest social media revolution, Jessica Gottlieb would have probably watched helplessly when her kids, Jane and Alexander, were trapped on the tarmac, waiting for their Virgin America flight to take off.
But that´s so 2008. When it happened to her last week, the Los Angeles-based blogger reached for her iPhone and twittered about her troubles. "Dear Virgin Air," she wrote. "My children have been on the tarmac for one hour with 90 more minutes to wait. I am at JFK gate b25. Pls RT."
That last request -- please "RT" -- is shorthand for Gottlieb´s nearly 10,000 followers to "retweet" her message, or rebroadcast it to their followers. And re-tweet they did. Within minutes, Virgin had phoned Gottlieb to reassure her that her kids would be fine.
"They contacted the gate agent manager and explained to us the entire weather situation," she says. "Within 20 minutes of that conversation, the plane took off."
The same forces that threaten to unravel a repressive Iranian regime are revolutionizing the way Americans travel. Social media sites that allow people to interact in the moment are changing how travel companies talk to their customers -- and how their customers talk back.
The net result? Travel could improve for everyone.
BEHIND THE SCENES
It may not come as a surprise that this movement is being powered by microblogging sites like Twitter, which allows travelers to communicate in short, 140-character bursts of text, and Facebook, the ubiquitous social networking site. (For more on microblogging and travel, see my recent column on the subject.) Sites like these let travelers share information almost at the same rate they receive it (or "real time," in tech parlance), which is something previous Web-based services didn´t let travelers do.
But few people have come to understand the far-reaching implications of the technology. Talk with someone like Cheryl Spezia, the vice president of marketing at the Destin, Fla.-based vacation rental company ResortQuest, and you get a sense that the relationship between the travel industry and its customers is being rewritten. "The dynamics have changed," she says.
ResortQuest´s Twitter presence has helped guests get quick answers -- and sometimes action -- about their accommodations. In one memorable case, a condo with a broken air conditioner that was in less-than-presentable shape was promptly fixed when it was brought to the company´s attention through Twitter.
THIRD WAVE
In order to understand what´s happening here, let´s hit "rewind" for a second. There have actually been three distinct customer service uprisings enabled, in part, by the Internet. In the late 1990s, Web sites and moderated discussion forums pushed the first wave of the revolution. But many travel companies brushed these sites off (http://www.elliott.org/the-travel-critic/airlines-ignore-web-whines/) because they were easily managed or ignored.
About a decade ago, blogs and emerging social networks like MySpace and LinkedIn gave rise to a second customer rights movement that is just now abating. The third wave, which harnesses the influence of Facebook and Twitter and may peak with a new Internet standard coincidentally called Google Wave, is just now on the horizon.
It´s a big one.
Consider Gottlieb´s choices. In 1998, she might have shared her story on a popular members-only online forum, but it probably would have languished there for weeks or the airline may have even persuaded a moderator to delete it. In 2005, she could have told her story on a social networking site, but her kids would have landed in L.A. before Virgin caught wind of the problem.

Sex or love: When your partner is unfaithful, what hurts the most?
Why the difference? There are a couple explanations. One relies on natural selection: It's important to men to know their genes are being passed on, so sexual infidelity is a bigger problem than romantic infidelity. Women, this explanation argues, are certain their children possess their genes, so they are more concerned that a man will use his resources to support the child of another woman. So sleeping with other women is not as bad as falling in love with them.

A second explanation suggests that there's no practical difference between romantic and sexual infidelity. Women assume that if a man loves another woman, he's also slept with her. Men assume that if a woman has slept with another man, she loves him. This was backed up by a 1996 study by Christine Harris and Nicholas Christenfeld. So what's different for men and women is what's implied by "sexual intercourse" and "love," not their level of offense at their partner's behavior. (Few of these explanations, by the way, account for same-sex relationships)
More recently, Monica Whitty and Laura-Lee Quigly wanted to see if similar principles held up cyberspace. Does cybersex and cyber-romance show the same gender difference? Whitty and Quigly surveyed 112 undergraduates with the same questions about sexual and emotional infidelity, but also asked cyber-versions of the same question. So respondents were given four choices to the question of what bothered them the most: A partner in love with someone else, having sex with someone else, in a cyber-romance with someone else, or having cybersex with someone else.
Then, for each possible relationship, they also asked whether love implied sex or vice-versa:
Imagine you discover your partner is engaging in sexual intercourse with someone else. How likely do you think it is that your partner is in love with that person?
Imagine you discover your partner has met someone else online and is engaging in cybersex with that person. How likely do you think it is that your partner is in love with that person?
Imagine you discover your partner is in love with someone else. How likely do you think it is that your partner engaging in sexual intercourse with that person?
Imagine you discover your partner is in love with someone else that they have met online, and have never met face-to-face. How likely do you think it is that your partner is engaging in cybersex with that person?
Perhaps not surprisingly, not one respondent said that cybersex or cyber-love was the worst type of infidelity. For physical sex and love, the responses broke down as follows:
These results matched the earlier studies: women are more bothered by their male partners' romantic infidelity, and men are more bothered by their female partners' sexual infidelity (all respondents said they were heterosexual).
But when they were asked whether love implies sex and vice versa, the responses differed from earlier studies:
In this study, men's ratings of whether sex implied love were significantly higher than women's ratings, but there was no gender difference in any of the other ratings. That's a sharply different result from Harris and Christenfeld, who also found that women were more likely to say that love implied sex.
This finding could reveal a flaw in both possible explanations of the gender difference in attitudes toward infidelity. If attitudes toward infidelity are a product of evolution, why would they be different in the two studies? If gender differences in whether sex implies love and vice versa are behind the original result, then why would Whitty and Quigley find different results than Harris and Christenfeld?
The results for cyberspace again don't tell us much. There's no significant difference between male and female responses, and it's clear that everyone believes physical infidelity, whether romantic or sexual, is much more serious than the online equivalent.

What to Know Before Buying a Laptop Battery
There are many laptop battery manufacturers, and even more retailers to buy your laptop battery from.
How to Choose a Replacement Laptop Battery
When buying a replacement aptop battery, you will probably only have one or two choices that fit your computer. Choose the battery with the longest life available for your computer. Traveling with Spare Laptop Batteries,Camera Batterie,Camcoder batteries
for details here:
http://www.aussie-battery.com/Traveling_with_Spare_Laptop_Batteries_Camera_Batteries.htm
For those of you who plan on traveling this year, whether it be a business trip or a vacation, it's a good idea to be familiar with the new guidelines associated with taking your spare batteries onboard any commercial airplanes. As of January 2008, the Department of Transportation issued a new rule that permits passengers on board commercial airplanes to carry spare lithium batteries in their checked baggage. The only types of batteries affected by this rule are ones containing lithium. This includes Li-ion, Li-Polymer, and Lithium Cobalt Oxide batteries. These batteries are regulated mainly because they pose as a potential fire hazard due to their lithium content. When lithium is exposed to air, it burns violently causing a threat to passengers on the airplane. The only way lithium batteries can be carried in your checked baggage is if they are already secured and installed in their device. This greatly reduces the chances of them becoming short-circuited.
You are still permitted to carry lithium batteries in your carry-on baggage even if they are not secured in a device; however, this is a big hassle since you may need different batteries for each of your devices. So instead of carrying many types of batteries why not just carry one universal battery such as an Amstron PP33/PP17 which has a USB output? The USB output on this battery comes with the following tips: miniUSB tip, Samsung tip, iPod tip, LG tip, Palm Treo Tip, Sony PSP tip, as well as a retractable USB cable and an AC jack.
For laptops, consider the PP66S since it has a much higher voltage and capacity to power most laptops for extended periods of time. The PP66S Titanium External Battery is the best portable battery available. With this you can maximize your laptop's efficiency even when an AC outlet is not available.
We would like everyone to enjoy their flights and road trips. Having your cellphone or entertainment device die is not a pleasant experience when the closest AC outlet is miles away. Make the best out of your devices and keep them alive.
