Call for battery recycling scheme

One third of all household batteries are bought at Christmas time, prompting a timely call from Queensland's sole Greens MP for a national recycling program.
Australia needs a comprehensive program of battery recycling within five years, says the member for Indooroopilly, Ronan Lee.
"This is a good time to think about what we do with used household batteries," Mr Lee said.
While urging the Queensland government to go it alone on a battery recycling scheme, he said it would be easier to administer if it went national.
"Queensland should follow the lead of successful recycling schemes where upwards of 25 per cent of batteries will be recycled," Mr Lee said.
"In Ireland, for instance, every battery producer must take back at least 25 per cent of what they put out on the market by 2012 and 45 per cent by 2016.
"This is a good system and gives battery producers an incentive to become partners with the community in developing workable methods of recycling batteries.
"Some battery retailers already have their own limited recycling schemes and they should be congratulated for taking the initiative, but we need to go much further and this requires government support."
Batteries were full of heavy metals and other poisons, said Mr Less.
There was also the sheer waste of throwing away recyclable goods.
"We need to move towards a society that is far less wasteful," Mr Lee said.
